A salesperson at my local music store, after selling me a $5.13 tenor reed, said that Vandoren has increased prices over 30%...yes you read correctly 30%!!!! That is horrible, and vandorens are my all time favorite reeds...
I'm feeling it too- especially when you get a box of 5 and on average 3 are decent...
I swear (well ok, this isn't from reeds but from gas mostly) all the rising prices are going to ruin our economy- what happens when the average American can't afford anything anymore?
Actually, it isn't from the increasing price in gas. French cane is starting to become scarce. Very. Companies have already started to halt or slow the production of oboe and bassoon reeds. The only thing we can do is to start exploring new options, or stop cutting down all the cane and letting the supply replenish. I say that we start to support Rico (I know...sue me. I don't like it either.) And look at other options like Mitchel Lurie or Grand Concert Selects. Hell, I got a Legere the other day and have been VERY impressed thus far.
first off, I also love the vandorens. My advice is to steer clear of the music stores, they increase prices to the extent of craziness. If you must buy reeds, buy them online. Also, I disagree with what the other guy said, being only 3 out of 5 are usable reeds. When it comes to vandoren, they are usually all usable, unless you are a fuss a&& about it.
Beetlejuice
<GASP> reeds are already expensive! how am i supposed to buy reeds that cost even MORE when im still trying to pay off my oboe! what is wrong with the world nowadays? and with gas $4 a gallon... something has to happen differently in the economy.
Ouch ..... one reed for over $5.00 ......... hmmmm more than a gallon of gas eh? That really scales how high the prices have gone. At the music store they recently told me they were going to discontinue single reed sales.
They use to have a reed box setup where individual reeds were stored and they would sell singles. Each one in it's own plastic casing. That was really cool.
Now you have to buy them by the box. Sure is enough to break my piggy bank just to buy some fresh reeds! ouch!
I buy reeds on the net too when I can.

don
