Soprano Saxophone Dilema

I`m thinking about getting a soprano sax, but there are just too many choices to make!

Are Maxtone soprano saxes good?

Should I get a curved or straight soprano? What`s the difference? Sound? Or just comfort? I heard two clips, one of curved and one of straight and it sounded like the curved has a better sound, but I think I would prefer straight.

What type of mouth piece is best? Are selmers good?

Any help is needed!

Thanks,
Jonathan

SELMERS ARE ALWAYS GOOD PURCHASES. I HAVE REF 36 TENOR THAT I CHERISH. BUT I RECENTLY PURCHASED THE YANIGISAWA 9930 SOLID STERLING SOPRANO AND IT IS KILLER. IT HAS THE DEEPEST SWEETEST SOUND. IF YOU HAVE AVAILABILITY TO TRY ONE DO SO BEFORE YOU BUY A HORN.

i have a yangisawa curved soprano with a dukoff d7 metal mouthpiece. Yes selmers are great one of the best. A curved soprano is louder and it in a way sounds better than straight. it is what you prefer, if you like playing straight than play straight. Curves tend to be a little bit out of tune but if you buy a good one like a yanagisawa it will stay in tune very well. But they cost a lot of money 2500 dollars. You should try them both, see what you like.

yes I hear maxtones are good and so are yamaha. i would suggest getting the straight one although I`ve researcked that they have no difference in sound but in other aspects they do, such as the enboucher and holding and confort. I would suggest though that you go to a store that lets you try them first. Selmers are good and so are dukoff(suggested only for when you are advance in playing)

So Maxtones are good? I hear they play well, but that the metal is really soft and can bend very easily. I`m thinking about getting one.

Are sopranos held at the same angle as clarinets? Is the embouchure and the "firmness" the same as clarinet? I want to get a straight.

I don`t know what you mean about the clarinet being held by an angle, but the soprano is held in front of you (some players play kinda to the side, but sometimes this is not good for beginners) and like I said go try them first if you want the curve soprano or straight

About the enboucher, I don`t think the clarinet and the soprano sax have the same enboucher cuz I tried to play a clarinet and couldn`t even get a sound out.lol

they have a comprable embochure,

Kenny-G isn`t a real saxophone player, he fakes it.

Q: If you put a sax player in a room with a lion, a tiger, and Kenny G, and the sax player has a gun with 2 bullets, what does he shoot?

A: Kenny G twice, just to be sure.

I played the Alto Saxophone about 10 years ago and now thinking about switching over to the Soprano. My best advice to you is to get a inexpensive Student model 1st until you become familiar with it. I heard the Soprano is alot more difficult to handle than an alto-- and student models might not compare with the top of the line Selmas. If you like it you can always sell the student model-- think of it as time invested.

Clarinet mpc is at about a 30 degree angle. A soprano at about a 45 degree angle. You blow into the mpcs differently too.

Different mpcs, reeds, etc. all vary and just trying one won`t do much.

IMHO, buying a cheap soprano is worse than a cheap alto. It will be difficult to play, more than an alto.

Find a buddy with a sop and see if you can try it to see if you like it. That will be the best test.

Hi, I`m a clairnet player really interested in playing the soprano sax and I was wondering whether they have the same fingerings or not.
