I've got a recorder that hasn't been used for a long time.

It's an Adler, and it's still in the cardboard box it originally came in. But I have no idea what sort of wood it is, and I'm wondering if it's important to identify that before I do anything with it like treating it with oil and so on.

Is linseed oil suitable for all types of wood recorders, or should I identify the type of wood and get something specifically for that?

The instrument fits together, but the joints are stiff and it doesn't fit perfectly. I checked a website that advised using something that's used by clarinettists, but again I wonder about the type of wood and so on, and any advice would be very welcome.

The colour of the wood is a sort of mid-brown. The box just says `The Genuine Adler Recorder. Handmade. High Class.' And then there's information about it being made in the GDR by the sole manufacturer of genuine Adler double tuned recorders.

It cost £9.53 in 1978 or 79.

I don't know if that's any help in identifying it?

Any advice would be very welcome.

don't think the type of wood makes any difference at this stage of its rejuvenation. If it was wax impregnated 30 years ago, the wax probably is not too effective any more.

It should be oiled. Go to http://www.bill-lazar.com/, Go to "Recorder Oiling" in the "FAQ/Information" box on the left. His information will get you through that process better than I could explain it.

The cork or waxed thread gasketing at the joints should have "cork grease" applied. Probably quite liberally if it has been sitting for that many years. You can get the product at most musical instrument stores.

You probably are aware that you should go through the "break-in" playing process with such an old, but unused instrument. You will also find information on that on Bill Lazar's site under "Recorder Care".

Good luck, --Jerry Walker/Pacifica CA

Great. Many thanks for that. I'll check out those links and get going with this instrument.
