My music teacher always talks about making sure all of my resonators are working properly when I sing, and one of our main focuses in vocal warm-ups is working the resonators....but I actually don't really know what a resonator is!!

Can anyone help me please? I really want to know what a resonator is, and it seems silly for me to ask my music teacher as she has been talking about getting the resonators working for so long that it would be rather stupid if I asked her now what she means!!!!

Thanks in advance,

Love Laura

if your voice is resonating there is a kind of vibration, and if you sing a long note it can sort of be heard after you finish singing it, it's sort of like having a natural vibrato in your voice but it's not as strong as vibrato, that is if you're talking about what i think yor talking about. hope that helps. shelly belly x

I believe your teacher refers to the cavities in the head (the sinuses) that act as kind of "mechanical" resonators or amplificators when you sing in the right way. I am talking of lyric singing, not so much of modern singing, except in the case of musicals, taht belong IMO to both worlds..

I do not think one "can check" that the resonators are working properly.

What the singer student should care is that the air stream rises well up until it "hits" the upper mouth cavity wall (just below the "resonators"). The voice should be emitted from that zone and not from the throat.

It is basically technique for imposting (sp?) the voice.

your resonators are the roof of your mouth, your nose (although excessive use can produce a nasal sound) and your skull (as gross as it seems) but your main resonator is your whole body. hw you stand and sit to sing affects your singing and the use of your diapraghm, and the sound "resonates" in your resonators (named above)
