Because of college I'm out of work until March. I want to take up singing lessons as I'm unhappy with my voice, but I can't afford them for another few months. So I was wondering what I could do until then to improve my voice?
Hi. If you Google "Singing Lessons" you will find many singing lesson sites on the web. Some of these will actually give you some free lessons to entice you to join. They also give some techniques to try out. But keep looking and you will find lots of singing instructions to help you along. Also why not join your local choir. It's important to keep singing and using the voice muscles. Try Bret Manning (I think that's how to spell it.)
I agree with the choir option. But try to find one that has a sing teacher or at least works vocalizing for several minutes before the rehearsals.
Beware, however, that the techniques to sing in choirs and to sing as soloist are somewhat different (I am talking of classical/lyric music).
But unless you have a better option, this activity will keep you working on your voice and it is also very pleasant. I was doing both for some time but then I had to stop taking lessons for economic reasons.
But I keep the choir, a very active one. (we have 16 concerts during December...)
Hi there,
Why don't you switch to the free on-line singing lessons. They are quite cheap and effcetive. I'm sure this links wil help you a lot

I offer one to one online lessons via skype. Reasonable prices. Just £14 for 30mins or £20 for 45mins. www.gemmadenman.com or email me at gemmadenman@yahoo.co.uk
Check the music department at your school. My university had voice lessons available that you could sign up for as a class. You could either take individual lessons, which cost around $100 or $150 for the semester, or you could take a class on vocal technique as an elective—you didn't get quite as much one-on-one time with the teacher, but it was cheaper and I still got a lot out of it.
Also, higher-level music students might give discounted or free lessons to earn money or meet pedagogy class requirements.
My wife wanted to take singing lessons. Not many singing teachers around where we live. I saw Brett Manning Singing Success on the net. We had a good look at it. We bought it. It's an "unusal" method. But she is improving every day.... It cost about $180 for 12 CD'sn course. Lasts about a year and there is e-mail hints coming all the time. Just thought I'd mention it, especially if you think one 2 one teaching is expensive. I'm not trying to sell it, but we found it works.
You might want to even look into joining a community choir to help get some training. Or even just practice alone. You could record yourself singing then listen to what you have done well or what you need to work on.
