I need to compose a song for a musical for my GCSE integrated assignment. I have never written a song before and i know you can start at any point because my teacher said it didn't matter. What part do you guys all find easiest to start off with? thankyou
I think start with the lyrics. Then once you've got the lyrics you can put chords to it that suit the mood and atmosphere of the song, rather than having a chord progression and then try to make the words fit to it. The melody has to be suited to the lyrics, especially in terms of the syllables and the important words that you want to emphasize. Hope that helps
I would start out with a beat or simple melody. and then as the lyrics are written, I would fill in a more complex melody, and then add in a harmony and chords based on the songs lyrics.
You can start with one or the other, but if you write lyrics first, make sure to keep your melody/chords/whatever in mind. Also, if you want a part with no lyrics, with just instruments playing, make sure to notate where you want that in your lyrics. I rarely write music with lyrics, just because I'm awful at it! If you feel the same way as me, and you can, I would just get a poetic friend to write the lyrics.
