Hello everyone,

I recently uploaded a video to YouTube on how to compose an 8-bar phrase.

Find it at http://youtube.com/watch?v=ejJtUdqW8ko

Hi,

I watched the video and I think it is of interest and really is a nice shortcut for composing. Inverting notes, moving them around and then repeating is a nice shortcut. With so much music full of repeats these days for the untrained listener this is common in fact. I like to compose a 16 bar phrase and then repeat it and in turn sometimes invert it, and add different layoring, and different tempos. In the process a whole 128 bar song can be written from 16 bars repeated in various forms 8 times. Case and point on at least one song of mine full of repeats of mine here on 8notes. (Can you guess which one?)

I use MIDI sequencing a whole bunch as well, and the ability to copy and paste in MIDI software on a computer or on the keyboard as well, makes this technique awesome! I have written whole songs and had them notated in less than 20 mins. Funny thing is that some of these end being my favorites even after hearing them 100 times. Still, there can be no doubt that this method might not be too good for true higher level compositions. Most people with a trained ear who prefer music that progresses will become bored with some of the material written using this technique. Also, it is not hard to argue that songs done this way may lack a certain "feel" to them, and the melody may not move them emotionally. This might be better referred to as "groove" tracks or "jam" tracks. Something nice to pricatice to for fun, but only for fun.

Thanks for sharing the video. It serves a useful purpose.
