What an excellent question.
Of course it is important to be aware of style, and you can't help wondering about what "category" other people will put you in. What's more, being naive about your own style can eventually be a hindrance if you wish to develop a sort of public identity.
Nevertheless, in my view this is much more important:
1) Try to "find your own sound" rather than worrying about "style." Calling it "style" is a sort of negative thing, I think. I think it's much better to think of it as finding your own musical identity. In other words, it's more about you, less about what other people think.
2) There's a difference between trying to adopt a style, and being influenced by others. In my view, the latter is very important, whereas the former is not really here or there. Listen to music you enjoy, of people whom you respect. Study their music closely. Allow yourself to be influenced by them. Try to allow their influence to guide you on your quest to find your own sound - your own musical personality. Be aware of others, don't be naive, but apart from that, forget about what other people think.
