Hi guys, I'm in 9th grade and I've been playing tuba for two years now.
In 7th grade when I first started playing the tuba, my highschool band director came to my middle school class and heard me play. It was only a month after I started playing and he commented that I had an incredible range and great sound.
I'm now in 9th grade and upon his recommendation, I'm trying out for All-State.
I'm working on the etude and I'm having some problems slurring.
You can view the etude here: http://www.gmea.org/
Go to the "Band division" tab, click on it, then click on All State Band, then click on 2008 scales and etudes and you'll find it.
Any tips?

I don't think that trying out as a freshman is an increddibly great feat. I mean it would be impressive to get in. I have played for 3 years, and was playing a level 5 NYSSMA solo my first year (soloed it my second). I have been playing for 3 years, just went to an audition where ALL OTHER tuba players had been playing 6 years+ and I got the first chair. So don't underestimate someone by their age and amount of playing. Though I have found it through my experience people that play an instrument for a few years think they are experts on the instrument, when they aren't. Not saying that is the case here.
My belief is that you need to have a can do attitude. In the audition, either play the best you had that day, or just don't play. With the sightreading, make them think they you know that piece inside and out, if you have that type of confidence and that mind set, you are sure to get in (well not sure, but at least you can feel good about your performance).

Hi guys, I had a great experience trying out.
I played the etude just fine. The reason I didn't make it, though, was because of the sightreading.
The rules say that you're supposed to be given a certain amount of time to look over the music before you play it. I, however, wasn't given that time. I was told to immediately play it.
I thought that I played it through really well, but I was so nervous at that point that I misread the time signature at 4/4 and it was really 6/8.
Anyway, I got to look at the score sheet, so I know what I need to improve on.
I came really close to making it, though.
