I gave the trumpet a half a year, and it beat me. But I guess it was a hard transition from the keys to the trumpet.

The thing that nobody told me about saxophone was that it`s so damn annoying to set up. I play piano, guitar, harmonica and I got an alto sax during Christmas. The saxophone is so annoying because you have to put it together and take it apart before and after EVERY session. You also have to clean or the pads will dry out!! Very annoying, you have been warned. Also, like somebody else already said, learning where the notes are is easy, playing it with expression is the hardest part.

I`d have to say that the easiest improv instrument is the guitar.

I can play the clarinet and other woodwind instruments but i started playing the saxaphone in september and i picked it up in less than 2 weeks! I think the saxaphone is easier to play than the trumpet, but my mum used to play the trumpet and she says its dead easy!

Saxaphone is easier in a lot of ways. It may take a while to learn all the buttons compared to the trumpet. Playing the trumpet is far more taxing on the embouchure than saxaphone is. It takes constant practice to keep good chops on the trumpet. You have to play all the time or your lips will get weak. On the trumpet your lips are basically being smashed up against metal. The stonger your sternum is, the less work it is on your lips. Trumpet is a much more powerful instrument, and when you play it people have no choice but to listen. When I first started playing sax I wanted it to scream mightly, but it just isn`t that kind of instrument. Those who are rugged and rough will choose the trumpet.

Learning the trumpet is 10 x`s harder than learning the saxaphone, i`ve learned both... and with the trumpet it`s complicated trying to get out just the right sound with only 3 notes.

I play trumpet and i taught myself over the summer. My friend taught herself sax over summer. We are both in the Jazz-concert band.....which is quite good. The rest of the kids there had already known how to play for 1-2 years...we had just learned. I`d say the hardest part about trumpet is reaching the high notes. U will eventually find it easier but to start with, the buzzing makes ur mouth very sore. With a sax, u have to get used to the reed. That can be quite difficult. U sort of have to blow inbetween the mouth-piece and the reed. They are generally equal, even though the trumpet has 3 valves, it is still difficult for quick playing, (pitches=different amounts of buzzing) and sax, simply is difficult to be very quick because the distance of keys. So, if u r thinking of learning one of them, choose whichever one u like the sound of.

Trumpet is definetely harder. There are about 11 sax in my band and they all sound the same. With the trumpet it`s SOOO much harder to get a strong, rich tone. And don`t say the fingering it`s easier cause one fingering can have like 6+ notes(depends on how higher or low you can hit.) Trumpet is a very very good instrument. People can often hear you(if you like people hearing you) and you always it`s the melody.(at least in my band). Unfortunately, sax looks more "difficult" than trumpet so it`s way more popular. People likes thing that look Good. Trumpets look so simple, but don`t worry, people that know music know that Trumpet is harder.
Good luck on chosing intruments.

I play the saxaphone and the trumpet and it is easier to play the saxaphone high note than the low and easier to play the low notes on the trumpet than the high.
