Last year in contsert band we playd jazz, Flute section had the best parts, Back then I playd flute, now I play on sax.
So yeh ther are a lot of good jazz players,
i play sax, but before i die (assuming i live a "natural" life) i will learn how to play the flute just for jazz flute. i can`t say i`ve thought long and hard about this, but i would say any instrument could play jazz-- within reason of the music`s attributes, i suddenly think -- considering jazz is a genre. i may be biased, but every instrument should give jazz a go, if the musician enjoys playing their instrument. no reason for anyone to refuse playing any kind of music, i suppose.
I played jazz flute in my junior jazz band this year. For the first half there was actual "flute" music, now i have to transpose the first alto`s music.... i`ve only heard a few jazz flutes, its pretty awesome ... It was cool to play jazz flute b ut noone really heard me because i was drowned out on my SOLO and for all the songs... stupid loud sax`s... lol jks...but it was still fun
Answering a little late, but if you want to play in a sax section in a jazz band beyond high school all saxs will have to learn to double on the flute and clarinet. There are some universities that require it, and some don`t, but more than likely they will expect you to learn. So there are plenty of Jazz flute players. In fact I know a few who learned to play sax just to be in jazz.
