well, i did ad libbing the other day, be we called it improvisation, and you've got to know the key ur in, then pick only about three or four notes, it's the most effective to use only a couple of notes. We were told you don't have to use the whole scale and you don't have to use the extreme range notes on ur instruments, just practice doing it. Use jazz rhythms and stick to the scale. What instrument do you play?? If you play trombone, you can use slides and glissandos, and stuff like that. If you play a reed instrument sqeek, or slide up to the note, or even gliss up to a note, when you press all ur keys down. Hope I helped, if you need to know anything else just send in this forum.
by the way, i play trombone in my stage band.

elizee – can you get a recording of that part of the music (plus a few bars preceding it) where you have to do your solo? (Doesn't have to be hi-fi ... just on your phone or whatever.) Then you can hear it over a few times just to get some ideas together. Even use it as a "music minus one" rehearsal track.
I've seen workshops which used an idea similar (but more basic) than Tubachick's. Pick one note to solo on (over piano, bass and drums) concentrating on interesting rhythms. If the chords change so that your one note doesn't fit, pick an adjacent note and continue the process. Play a whole stack of choruses using that idea before you worry about going to the third note ... etc, etc.

I agree with "Tuba Chick" I think that's EXACTLY how to do it. That is what I tell people all of the time.
Good Luck

another option is to take part of the songs melody line and alter some of the rythyms or notes to create ur solo. i like to do that when i solo; i usually try to keep it recignizable, but still changed up enough that its obviously my own and not just another written line in the song.
