Is it really possible? I mean I play some miles Davis and Thelonius monk among some others. But would it work in a band?

I`m a guitarist myself but in my school small combo, I`ve got a flutist. She used to play classical flute and she recently switched to jazz. She thought it would be harder, she`s getting pretty good. The disadvantage with flute in a band is that it got much less power than a sax or a trumpet have, so you have to be amplified and bo out-standing in your perfomance. I think it`s a little bit harder to sound jazz with a flute, especially in the bebop style, but listen to HUBERT LAWS, and you`ll see that it`s possible. This guy`s got the continuous blowing, u kno what I mean, he blows and breathe at the same time.
Personnally, I love flute in a latin context, or latin-flavored jazz.Listen to H.Laws with Chick Corea and Return to Forever, or with bass-player Jaco Pastorius on his first albu. K-I-C-K-A-S-S!!!!

hmmm...sorry, I mentioned that Hubert Laws played with Return to Forever. Wrong. Joe Farell did, and he did it good. However, Hubert Laws did play with Jaco Pastorius, and he`s a hell of a jazz flutist.

sure it`s possible. We tried a jazz quartet once with bass, drums piano and flute (amps only on the bass) and it worked pretty well. We did an arrangement of `Baby it`s cold outside` with a duet between piano and flute. If you`re a classical flautist transferring to jazz, find a piano player and play Claude Bolling`s suite for flute and jazz piano.

I`m also interested in playing jazz with my flute. I know it`s possible, but my family`s going to be moving this summer and I`m not sure if the band director there will let me join the jazz band. I can play trumpet, but I`m much, MUCH better at the flute. Are there any beginning jazz method books I can be working on this summer so I`ll be better prepared come school time again?
