I am looking for some music, classical or folk, that is written for the following combination of instruments:
(flute 2 optional)
(and maybe a guitar)
I've looked at our local music stores for music arranged for this particular grouping of instruments and it has been difficult to find music for this exact arrangement because it is not a traditional ensemble grouping such as a string quartet. If we had a cello player or a bassoon player our music selection would be easy because we could simply play music written for traditional quartets or quintets but we are missing those two instruments (cello and bassoon).
On the piano, I could try to cover up for the missing instruments by improvising my own arrangement but it would be much more convenient if I could find some music already written for this combination of instruments.
These are the instruments that each of the members of our family play and I thought it would be ideal if I could find some music for us to play together, either classical or folk.
Should I look for string quartets and adapt them (by filling in the missing instrument parts with the piano), or should I look for woodwind quartets and adapt them?
Any suggestions of particular pieces?
We would be playing this music for our own enjoyment and as well at an upcoming cultural festival and so we are looking for some easy listening music such as Classical, modern, ragtime, romantic or folk. - but nothing too abstract like Stravinsky.
The closest I could find for this combination of instruments was a Haydn piano quintet (op.84), Dvorak op.5, Chausson concerto in D op.21, the Poulenc sextet (1932-1939) and a Mozart piano quintet KV414 but none of these are perfect matches for this combination of instruments.
