Mexican composer and songwriter Alfonso Esparza Oteo (1894–1950) was born in Aguascalientes and became one of the leading figures in early 20th-century Mexican popular music. After moving to Mexico City, he gained prominence in the 1920s through radio, theatre, and the growing recording industry. His songs quickly became staples of the canción romántica tradition.

Esparza Oteo wrote boleros, waltzes and sentimental songs that combined simple melodic lines with memorable, expressive lyrics. Among his most enduring works are Dime que sí, “Háblame de amor,” “Ojitos mentirosos,” and “El Limoncito.” His music helped define the romantic song style that flourished in Mexico between the 1920s and 1940s. Esparza Oteo remained active as a composer, broadcaster and cultural promoter until his death in 1950, and many of his songs continue to be performed today.
