Clara Schumann (1819–1896) was a German pianist, composer, and the wife of composer Robert Schumann. Over a 60-year performing career, she brought a fresh approach to the piano recital, focusing on musical depth rather than showmanship. Her compositions include a piano concerto, chamber music, songs, and solo piano works.

Born Clara Wieck in Leipzig to musician parents, she was trained by her father and began touring as a pianist at age eleven. In 1840 she married Robert Schumann, with whom she had eight children. The couple maintained a close friendship with Johannes Brahms. After Robert’s death, Clara continued to perform internationally, taught at Frankfurt’s Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory, and edited her husband’s music. Interest in her compositions began to revive in the late 20th century.
