Mexican composer and violinist Juventino Rosas was born in 1868 in Santa Cruz, Guanajuato. He grew up in a musical family and learned violin at an early age, later moving to Mexico City where he performed in dance bands, theatre orchestras and military ensembles. Despite limited formal education and frequent financial hardship, Rosas established himself as a gifted writer of salon music during the late 19th century, contributing waltzes, polkas and mazurkas to the popular repertoire of the time.
Rosas is best remembered for his waltz Sobre las Olas (Over the Waves, 1888), which achieved international popularity and became one of the most recognisable pieces of Mexican light music. He wrote several other dance works, including Carmen, Flores de México and Juventud, but none matched the fame of his signature waltz. Rosas died in 1894 at just 26 years old, yet his music continues to be widely performed and remains part of the core Latin American salon tradition.
