Italian composer, violinist and conductor Vittorio Monti was born in 1868 in Naples. He studied violin and composition at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella before working as a performer and conductor in various European cities. By the early 1900s he had settled in Paris, where he directed the Lamoureux Orchestra ensemble and composed works for both stage and salon performance.
Monti is best known for his Csárdás (1904), a showpiece for violin based on Hungarian folk dance rhythms. It became one of the most popular light-classical pieces of the 20th century and is widely performed by musicians of all levels. Although none of his other works achieved the same fame, Monti wrote ballets, operettas, and chamber music during his career. He died in 1922, leaving behind a small but enduring contribution to the violin repertoire.
