Brazilian flautist and composer Pattápio Silva was born in 1880 in Itaocara, Rio de Janeiro state. Raised in modest circumstances, he showed early musical talent and studied flute in Rio. In his professional life he helped bring the flute to greater prominence in Brazilian popular and salon music at the turn of the 20th century.
Silva composed a small number of works, mainly for solo flute and piano, which blend European salon idioms with the melodic and rhythmic character of Brazilian music. Pieces such as “Evocação,” “Méditation,” and “Sonho” remain popular among flautists in Brazil and beyond. His career was cut short by his early death in 1907, at the age of 26, but his compositions and recordings helped establish a distinctive Brazilian flute tradition.
