German flautist, composer and theorist Johann Joachim Quantz was born in 1697 in Oberscheden, near Göttingen. Initially trained as an oboist, he later switched to the flute and studied in Dresden, Paris and Italy, becoming one of the leading flute players of his generation. In 1741 he entered the service of Frederick the Great of Prussia, acting as the king’s flute teacher, court composer and instrument maker.
Quantz wrote over 300 flute concertos, numerous sonatas, and important pedagogical works. His most influential publication, “On Playing the Flute” (Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, 1752), became a foundational treatise on 18th-century performance practice and remains widely studied today. He died in 1773, leaving behind a body of work central to the flute repertoire and to our understanding of late Baroque and early Classical style.
