French composer Déodat de Séverac was born in 1872 in Saint-Félix-de-Caraman (now Saint-Félix-Lauragais) in the Languedoc region of southern France. He initially studied law at the University of Toulouse before turning to music, enrolling at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he worked with Vincent d’Indy and Albéniz. Although he spent several years in the capital, Séverac remained closely tied to the culture, language and landscapes of southern France, which became central to his musical identity.

Séverac wrote piano works, songs, and stage music, many of them drawing on Occitan traditions, folk melodies and regional colour. His piano suites En Languedoc and Cerdaña are among his best-known pieces, notable for their atmospheric harmonies and evocations of Mediterranean life. He died in 1921, aged 48, leaving a relatively small but distinctive body of work that helped promote the musical character of southern France at a time when Paris dominated the country’s artistic scene.
