Hi all,
I am a flute performance major at Western Michigan University.

I currently play a Pearl Quantz 765 RBE-CODA, and I don't really like the headjoint on it.
I am in the market for a new headjoint, and have tried most headjoint types on the market.
I really took a shine to the powell and Burkart Aurumite heads, and I also liked the Haynes mixed-metal combos.

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these heads, mostly the powell 9K and 14K.
I'm looking for a headjoint with increased resistance and a large spectrum of tonal and dynamic possibilities, if that helps any.
My flute is .015 wall, and the powell aurumite 14K is .014 and the aurumite 9K is .016, and I know I could have them fitted, but I'm kinda hesitant for that.

Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated,
Musically yours,
jdkmusicbmx

The dimensions that you mention (.014, .015, .016) are the wall thickness of the tubing. This is unrelated to fitting a headjoint tenon to fit your flute. Headjoint tenon sizes (tube diameter) also vary. These are typically in the range of .770 to .790. Most of the intermediate/pro flutes produced today are around .775-.781. In most cases, headjoints within this range (a few thousandths of an inch) can be easily resized with no ill effect.

See this comparison chart:
http://goferjoe.bygones.biz/headsize.htm

Powell's are usually around .775. Unfortunately, Pearl is not listed, but it's probably close to that size.

Hopefully, Joe B will see your post and chime in. He posts here pretty often and he's a rep for Pearl. Joe knows the Pearl line (and others) really well. I'm sure he can add some additional insights.

I have been trying headjoints for months trying to find something with more resistance as well. Try the Arista L2 model. I think fluteworld might have a used one (if you are trying to save a little) and Flute Specialists has a large selection of new ones. Both are in the Detroit area, if you are able to make a road trip.

actually, FluteSpecialist is coming to WMU at the end of the month, and then the day after I'm heading to fluteworld.
I have a large list of heads to try,
and I have to money to make a purchase, so hopefully I'll find one I like :D

I have a Powell 14k aurumite body for sale. I am a member of the West Michigan Flute Association, and live in Grand Rapids. If you would like to come and try it out you may. I play a Pearl also, and the headjoint has never been sized. If you'd like to talk more about this, let me know. I'll tell you how to contact me.

Well, thanks for everyones help!
I ended up borrowing two Arista heads from flute specialist.
I got a T and L2 cut, sterling silver throughout, both with the batee tube, and Used them for about a week,
and my mind was made up.

I bought the L2 cut and I love it!
I was surprised though because I usually only like gold riser heads, but I went in with an open mind and came out with an open tone.

Thanks again for everyone's help, it was greatly appreciated!
