Seat Strap Vs. Neck Strap Vs. Shoulder Strap Vs. Harness

.. once again, please forgive me if something like this has been raised b4, i was wondering how many people use seat straps, compared to those who use neck straps and harnesses and shoulder straps. I have used all barring the shoulder strap, but i know they exist, and i find that a harness is good for standing and playing and allows u to get up and move with your bassoon easily, but i still think that the seat strap is good for playing for long durations of time. whats your opinion?

(P.S the "harness" i refer to is a baritone sax harness that goes over both shoulders and round the sides.)

I use a seat strap all the time to play, but if I have to take my bassoon somewhere, like up onto a stage, or walk around with it for awhile, I also hang a neck strap on so I can use that while I'm up and about.

The 2 symphony orchestra bassoonists in our city both use seat straps - one uses the type that has a cup instead of a hook at the end so she can get up easily to take bows (she plays in lots of chamber groups and other small stuff)and the other one uses a regular seat strap.

I've found that neck straps put too much pressure on the upper part of your body, and then it makes it harder to breathe. LOL, Plus it helps that the hooky thing on my bassoon fell off..

I think it depends on which situation u are in wwhen u playing the bassoon.If u need to playing for a long time, then i think u should use seat strap as that can reduce the pressure on the Shoulder or Neck.

But most important is u should consider the angle between ur reed and leaps. Different strap will create a different angle. So u must adjust carefully before u play. A wrong angle can affect the projection of ur sound and most likely the staccato will be slower if u hv a "bented angle" between the leaps and reed.
