 I quite like the trombone in a brass ensemble but don't like it too much alone or in small jazz bands, it works best in a good brass band imo. 
The Cello is wonderfully warm, it has a very nice human voice.
 
I'm just more of a woodwind person. It's the breathing into an instrument so it sings that really gets me. So i'd still go for the bassoon.
 
But I think I'm biased
