I`d have to say that gender makes no difference in how well you play. I`m the only bassoonist in our school band and I`m female and I play pretty well for the 6 months that I have been playing. I think that if you just work hard enough at playing and you really take your time to comb over all the little details you can be a great player no matter if you are male or female.

At the international double reed conference in Australia this year which I am attending, there are some exceptional bassoons coming out from both genders. Some of the greatest players in the world are female, and vice versa.
I think it might be like a flute though, where are higher proportion of females play flute and a higher proportion of males play bassoons?

 Hiya!
I`M also a bassoon player and I`m female.. I only know 1 other girl who`s playing the bassoon and in the orchestra I`m in there are 2 guys playing the bassoon... and I`m the only girl lol..

I think it doesn`t depend on the gender..
