Hello,

I have been playing violin for about three months now. It is a very difficult instrument to master, making me more appreciative of violinists. My teacher says that I tend to saw at the instrument at times (when I`m tense or haven`t had enough practice time during the week is usually when he ends up saying this), but he hasn`t given any suggestions on how to stop "sawing." Do any of you have any suggestions?

Look at the mirror when u play, in that way u can check and correct any wrong postures/movements.
I think yr elbows are moving in and out too much. And probably your shoulders also.

What do you mean exactly by "sawing"? Is it just how it sounds, like rough and scratchy, or does your bow not stay straight?

Hello all,
Thank you for your help. For some odd reason the replies didn`t get sent to me even though I clicked the option, and I just now remembered I`d posted here.

It`s not so much the sound, it`s the motion, I believe is what my teacher means -- to the person who asked.

I`m not moving my shoulder...It`s probably my elbow moving too much.

Thank you all again. I`ll try getting a mirror in my room so I can practice in front of one when I finally can practice. *hates make up hw*
