English composer, violist and conductor Frank Bridge was born in 1879 in Brighton, where he received his first musical training from his father, a violin teacher and bandmaster. He later studied composition at the Royal College of Music under C.H.H. Parry and became active as a performer, notably with the English String Quartet. In the early 20th century he established himself both as a chamber musician and as a conductor, working with various London orchestras.

Bridge’s compositions range from early Edwardian salon pieces to much more adventurous works influenced by modernist harmony. His output includes orchestral suites, string quartets, songs, and the tone poem The Sea (1911), one of his most frequently performed pieces. He is widely recognised today as the principal teacher of Benjamin Britten, whose later success brought renewed attention to Bridge’s music. Bridge died in 1941, leaving a diverse catalogue that charts the transition from late Romanticism to early 20th-century modernism in Britain.
