Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born in 1710 in Jesi, near Ancona. He studied in Naples, where he became associated with the city’s vibrant operatic tradition. Despite his short life, he produced a notable range of sacred music, operas, and instrumental works. His most important sacred composition, the Stabat Mater (1736), was widely admired and performed throughout Europe.
