Spanish Renaissance composer and priest Tomás Luis de Victoria was born in 1548 in Ávila. Victoria was ordained a priest and held several posts in Rome before returning to Spain in 1587 to serve as chaplain and music director at the convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Victoria is widely regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the Renaissance. Victoria died in 1611, leaving a body of work that represents the peak of Spanish liturgical polyphony.
