Born:
1670
Died:
1736
The Artist:
Italian Baroque composer.
Info: Lyrics

Come raggio di sol mite e sereno
sovra placidi flutti si riposa
mentre del mare nel profondo seno
sta la tempesta ascosa.

così riso talor gaio e pacato
di contento, di gioia un labbro infiora,
mentre nel suo segreto il cor piagato
s'angoscia e si martora.

Translation:

As on the swelling wave in idle motion,
Wanton sunbeams at play are gaily riding,
While in the bosom of th' unfathom'd ocean
There lies a tempest in hiding:
So are many that wear a mien contented,
Many a visage whereon a smile e'er hovers,
While deep within the bosom a heart tormented
In secret anguish covers

Alternative translation:

Like a ray of sunshine, gentle and serene,
Resting on the peaceful waves,
While in the deep bosom of the sea
The storm is hidden.

So much laughter, gay and calm,
Of happiness, of joy, a lip like a flower,
While in secret the tormented heart
Anguishes and martyrs itself.
