About 'Symphony No. 1 Opening Theme'
Elgar, Edward (biography)
June 2, 1857 , Broadheath, Worcestershire
February 23, 1934
English composer from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries who wrote some of the most popular works in the English repertoire.
This theme opens Elgar's first symphony, which was a huge success on its premiere in 1908. Elgar wrote, "the opening theme is intended to be simple and, in intention, noble & elevating ... the sort of ideal call - in the sense of persuasion, not coercion or command - and something above every day & sordid things. The theme returns in a grandioso statement at the very end of the symphony.
