Important composer from the Baroque period who became a British citizen in 1726. He wrote many operas and oratorios, including the popular Messiah.
The oratorio Messiah is Handel's most famous work (approached only by his Water Music) and remains immensely popular among concert-goers in the English-speaking world. The "Hallelujah Chorus" is the most famous movement of the work and concludes the second of the three parts of the entire work. The text is drawn from three passages in the New Testament book of Revelation.
