The two most well known settings of The Holly and the Ivy are by John Stainer and Cecil Sharp. The most popular version today is a traditional English folk melody, collected by Sharp in 1909 from a woman called Mary Clayton, in the market town of Chipping Campden, England. The Stainer setting was included in late 19th Century carol collections and is the version most often sung in choral and church contexts. Unless otherwise stated, versions shown are based on by Sharp.
