Erik Satie : Vexations

Info
Born:
1866 , Honfleur
Died:
1925 , Paris
The Artist:
Eccentric French composer who influenced the Parisian composers of the early 20th century, including Debussy and Stravinsky. His ballet Parade was performed by Diaghilev and displayed a jazz influence. He is known for his comic and bizarre titles, such as 'Three Pear-shaped pieces'.
Composed:
c.1893
Info:
The notorious piece, where the inscription reads "In order to play the theme 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities"

From the 1960s onward, this text has mostly been interpreted as an instruction that the page of music should be played 840 times, though this may not have been Satie's intention.

The strange enharmonic notation of the piece is also Satie's own concept.
