I have a question. This comming marching band season we will only have two flutes. That is if neither of them become drum major. The problem is that we need more flutes for the show that we are doing. I play clarinet and it is my main instrument but I also play flute. There is a clarinet solo and a flute one but I know I am not good enough on flute for the flute one and would really like to get the clarinet one because I can play it so well. If your band director asked you to switch would you? Another thing is the show is a grade five and really cool. It is also going to be my senior year. What would you do?

Stick with what you love the best. If your heart is playing the Clarinet then stick to your guns.

I agree with KC. Do what makes you happy and give your support to the two flutes...it is tough with a small section trying to play a big peice.

Stick with the clarinet if having a solo really means a lot to you it is your senior year and last chance for one so don`t sell yourself out of it.
If you are really between a rock and a hard place which it does sound like you are I would audition for the clarinet solo and if you get it way cool. If you don`t get then switch to the flute if that is at all feasible, because then you have nothing to lose.
If switching after auditions isn`t feasible then stay on the clarinet and give yourself every chance you can for that solo.
Best of luck with auditioning.

Thank you Tanya. That advice really helped. I think that is what I am going to do. I started on clarinet so it really means alot to me so I will do what you suggested. Thank you once again.
