Hi flute players. Flutes rock! I`m in the 6th grade, about to go into the 7th grade. I`m pretty good, not to brag. I want to get a new flute but my dad said I can`t get a new one until high school. I thought if I raised the money I could get one or if I could pay half or something. If anyone knows the cost of a flute can you please reply. Thanx.

I just got a silver head joint open hole flute for $700.00 All silver flutes open hole start at about $1,000 hope that helps. I`m first chair in 8th grade band. I got a first at contest so a new flute is worth it.

Hey. I`ve been playing the flute since I was 7, I`m 14 now. My mum`s a music teacher, her Yamaha cost her AUD$1000. I have a Yamaha as well, I got it last year. That cost me AUD$1500. They vary.

PS AUD means Australian Dollars

I`m in the 6th grade too. My band teacher says the oldest instruments sound the best if they are in good condition. Like, not alot of bumps in it. He compared a new one and a old one together and the oldest one soundest the best. If I were you, I`d keep what you got.

If you want to upgrade to a mid-range model.. then the price isn`t going to be too cheap. You can get a flute with silver-headjoint by Yamaha for £900 (about $1400) which is a nice instrument with a nice rounded, thick sound, nice head-joint.

My set of flutes vary in price and level:
£150 ($200) second-hand Beuscher... (The instrument I learnt on... I never got around to selling it)
£50 ($70) second-hand Selmer Gold... (I saw this in a shop window and it was in a right state... I felt really sorry for it. Sad I know! I managed to clean it up and it plays really well now.
£400 ($650) new Trevor James... (This is a *nice* mid-range instrument (silver-plate). Plays well, responsive head-joint, runs smoothly.)
£2100 ($3000) new Miyazawa... (silver head-joint/tube, open-hole, gold riser, amazingly responsive head-joint and beautifully-fluid keyworks. Runs like water!)
I wouldn`t mind a hand-made Cooper hed-joint to go on this flute but I have to save my pennies.

Ebay is okay for a beginners instrument but a big disadvantage if you want anything more than that as you can very rarely try it out first. Just a thought.

"My band teacher says the oldest instruments sound the best if they are in good condition."

Nonsense! New instruments are in far better condition and sound a hell of a lot better. It seems strange that the professionals would change their instruments after 2/3 years or sometimes less (and they`re playing silver/gold/platinum/steel/titanium instruments immaculately taken care of) if the older instruments sounded better than a new one.

"If I were you, I`d keep what you got."

Right, how is that progress? A new upper-level flute can improve sound with a new head-joint (more responsive) and fluidity of scales etc with smoother keywork.

Yeah Right! My band teacher is one of the best player in the state of Georgia! And I have proof, b/c I heard him try out a new and old flute and the oldest one sound the best! You wouldn`t know, b/c you probably haven`t experimented them. Trust me! Old ones are the best and sound the best! It just has to be in good shape.

On the contrary. I have had the luxury of testing both new and old flutes (from beginner to handmade instruments in gold/silver and platinum) side by side on many occaisions since I started playing the flute (I started at 11, I`m now 18).
Were the one`s your band teacher tried out the same make? same model? beginner? mid-range? or handmade? ...as that will obviously have an effect on the sound produced. ie. a refurbished 14k gold Cooper is likely to have a better sound and be more playable than a new nickel-silver Selmer (Yes, I have tried this).
Have you ever considered what the best players in the World might play? New or old? If old flutes sound so much better then why do the majority buy in new instruments and keep each one for just a few years? James Galway is a good example of this. 14K gold flutes bought straight from Muramatsu.

My band teacher has had it longer than 7 years. It`s not a beginner b/c he is not a beginner and has been playing since he was about 10 yrs. old and I`m sure he hasn`t kept his flute that long. But, atleast 20 yrs., hes like in his early 50s or late 40s. All he told us the older the instrument the better. And he showed us w/ a saxophone also. I still agree w/ what I said. Even if you have more experience being 18.
