people try to tell me that the flute is a stupid instrument. some people also say that it is a "girl" instrument. PLEASE STOP! it`s a wonderful instrument that both genders can play and anyone who doesn`t think so is pretty immature!! I am 14 and in 10th grade ... been playing for 5 years going on 6 and am profusely enjoying it!!! LAY OFF GIRLS WHO SAY THAT GUYS CAN`T PLAY AS WELL AS GIRLS!!! we wanted them to lay off on us when we weren`t allowed to vote, but they stopped trying to be our surperiors and started being our equals so let`s give them the same chance and respect they gave us! please...i`d like to hear from all of you. this is my opinion and you don`t have to agree with me but if you do or don`t i would like to hear from you either way!!! Thank you for suffering through the longest message in the history of forums!

I`m a college student in Buffalo. I attend Canisius College.I have been playing for a little over 8 years. I know the stero type about the flute being a female instrument. But, I have come across a couple of guys that have played the flute and were good at it. I don`t see why guys make a fuss about it. Just look at James Galway or the late Jean-Pierre Rampal who was a great classical and jazz flutist. So, there are male flutists out there and the guys shouldn`t stero type the flute as a female instrument. Also, flute is not boring.(Sorry about the long response. It must be the longest response ever.)

Most people who say the flute is a `stupid` instrument in my experience generally are not musical in the slightest... either that or they play a `macho` instrument (elec. bass, guitar, drums etc).
It`s almost as if some guys are paranoid that their sexual orientation may be brought into question if they so much as touch this long, silver tube. It`s quite amusing actually.

I`ve seen little of the stereotype that the flute is a female instrument. every single one of my teachers to diploma bar one were male and I play in several wind and orchestral groups alongside male flautists, oboists etc. All very good musicians.

Most who say it`s `girlish` hve never tested the water to discover for themselves.

I agree with most of what you have said. But, in my experience, I have hardly seen any male that is daring to play the flute. I hav know one personally and the other I met at an college audition to get into the music department. Besides, I have never thought that the flute or have even heard that the flute was a "stupid" instrument.

i agree with u.....guys have been dissing US for years.....let`s not "stoop to their level" and do the same....and i also hate it when people say that flute is only for girls.

I completley agree with you. I play in a school band and 3 of the 7 flautists are male. They are all quite good, and the one is practically a prodigy. I totally agree with the fact that males can play the flute just as well as us, if not better, at least some of them.

No! The flute is very very far from borning! I think it is the most iteresting instrument. I love to play. And for all you people who are saying guys are better than girls and girls are better than guy, please shut up! I mean, it really depends on how much you practice and enjoy your flute. The indian flute has been traditionally a male instrument and it has been only recently that women have been allowed to progress with this instrument. All instruments are for all people.

the flute is the best!! except as the wind ensemble director would say, "Very Competitive" (might have spelled that wrong.
