Do you think it is possible to "double register" on this forum? What I mean is, can the same computer (or IP address) be used for more than one person?
For example, perhaps two people in the same household (husband and wife, etc.) want to use these forums. Can both register, but as seperate individuals?

I would say that it's absolutely possible. The registration and login work off of e-mail addresses, so as long as you have a second email it is definitely possible. You could even get a junk e-mail that you would use only to register for this forum. If you want to use the same e-mail address, I would still expect it to be possible as long as the passwords are different so that there is some differentiation between accounts.

Sorry to say, Kippsix, but I just tried it, and you must have two different e-mails to have two different accounts. The registration will ask something along the lines of "This e-mail is already on record. Have you forgotten your password?" if you try to use the same e-mail address for two separate accounts.

Well, the reason why I ask is that I have a feeling that this is being done here already. I think that there are people posting under different names.
I guess it's not that big of deal, no harm no foul.

From my (very elementary)understanding of computers, I think that it could be tracked by the IP address only. My sons have a website that is fairly heavily traveled, and one of the components is a forum-type setup. They track by IP and block the trouble maker that way. "Names" can be changed too easily.
Oh well.......

I can tell you that this can be done. My wife and I both post on this site using the same computer.

Blocking by IP address doesn't work well unless the user has a static IP (the IP address is assigned exclusively to that user and never changes). Most users have dynamic IP addresses (changes every time the computer is rebooted, or in the case of dial-up users, every time you dial into your ISP). It is possible to block ranges of IP addresses, but then you run the risk of bloacking a significant numbers of users that share the same provider, say AOL or AT&T.

And it *is* possible to hide your IP address by routing through a proxy server. So there really isn't a method to permanently block specific users.

Right you are Ninna.

I most IP addresses are assigned dynamically by the ISP (each time the user connects) and also wide band addresses are dynamic (though less than dialups), unless one has paid for a fixed IP address -this is considerably more expensive- and I believe it is only available for domains like .com .biz .org and not to individual users.

There are several ways to cheat on the IP address using proxies, such as on-line "anonymizers". These are special proxies that are out there by the hundreds, just to hide the identity of an (usually) offender user.

Sure this site is not using any screening based on IP addresses as they are not effective.

Recently the ISP are forced by law to keep one year registers of their users and the dynamic addresses they have used for each specific connection. But this is related to the war against terrorism and the Mafias, child porno networks and other disgraces of the Internet.

This information is only (at last theoretically) available to a Judge investigating a crime.

PCs cannot be identified as they don't carry a traceable fixed ID number. The industry (I believe the major actors were Intel an Microsoft) fought strongly to get an ID number electronically engraved in each microprocessor. But this was very strongly opposed by Internet users associations (specially in USA) and as far as I know, could not be implemented.

Now, the possibility of having "Multiple personalities" in a Forum or chat space is quite normal and is a feature of the virtuality we enjoy -and suffer. I do not use it, but I find it somewhat appealing.

But lots of people use it frequently and I think it gives some additional possibilities to a site, provided we always take into account that anything said (written) here can have a very different origin than the one declared on the poster's profile or from what we could expect from the aka (not to speak of avatars!)

Those who fear that a person banned because of improper behavior could post again under a different name, should consider that a "person" under an fictitious name is not the real person, but just the image that the real person wants to give to its chosen personality.

So, if a banned guy or girl posts again and that time he/she behaves properly, this is, IMO, completely acceptable.

Second (or later) chances are always good; Internet gives this possibility, that so often is denied in real life.

The inherent anonimity is part of the black legend of Internet but also the basis of the extreme freedom of thought and speech that it permits.

For these reason, all attemps to

<Added>

Sorry, just disregard "for this reason, all attemps to".
It comes from a problem with my sloppy cut and paste...

You are right jose luis, second chances etc. are part of this virtual community. I am sure that there are double posters, and it's actually kind of fun to try to make the connection.
I also do not do it myself, maybe because I am stuck in my ways and don't venture out!! Or maybe I don't have enough personality to split between more than one character!! Or....maybe I have such an enormous ego that I need all of the attention channeled directly to me....or maybe...

Okay, enough selfdeprecation.
