Did anyone else see the episode of Myth Busters about whether or not an unassisted human voice could shatter a crystal glass? It was a really cool show. I don't want to give it away if you haven't seen it, but I was enthralled with that episode. Here is the link if you are interested in watching it.

Sometime ago I saw a long thread on this subjetc (breaking glass with unassisted voice) in the voice Forum on this same site.

Not so long a thread as I remembered it (just 30 posts.) One can find the most diverse opinions on the subject, as usual

It is interesting, but probably should have been posted in the voice forum and not the flute. Just a thought

It would be possible, I suppose, but just as unlikely as with the human voice. There's no denying that it's possible to do, but very few people will ever successfully accomplish breaking a glass with their voice, and it's likely more difficult with a flute (which is not quite so easily elastic in pitch as the human voice).

I think the flute might accually be to high pitched to do that.

Maybe if you pulled the head joint all the way out, fingered a c#2 and overblowed enough to sound the 2nd octive and 3rd octive at the same time; Maybe it would work.

too high pitched*** not "to high pitched"

I think the real question is could the flute use the correct desible (sp) level unassisted? They said in the video how loud the actual person sang, so could the flute play that exact harmonic at that level of volume? It would be an interesting test.

If I had a glass and a video recorder, I would give it a shot. I think it's unlikely (we all know the flute has a somewhat limited volume range), but it couldn't hurt to try. Unfortunately, living in a dorm, I have neither available. Sorry!
