Another poster asked me for this music, so I have just posted in on my site. I read that there is no longer a copy right on this. If there is, please let me know and I will remove it from my site. I get so many requests for this piece, so I just posted it for all. You can view it here...

Sorry, I removed it from my site until I know for sure if there is still a copyright on it.

Haha thanks Kara!

I got it about a year ago when a group email was sent out with it(?)

Regardless the reason I got it was to work on it since my school's wind ensemble always plays it.

THIS YEAR THEY DON'T! Instead it's like Florentiner, Chimes of Liberty, Washington Grays, and Washington Post, (maybe others, but I don't remember) but NO Stars and Stripes Oh well!

Another version is available at http://www.bands.uiuc.edu/alumnimusic/Alumni%20Band%20Traditional%20Music/Traditional%20Piccolo.pdf (warning - large file) on page 17 (1st C Piccolo) and page 22 (2nd C Piccolo). Please note the copyright warning on page 1.

So is there still a copyright on this? I think that I am going to take it off my site then.

Not necessarily. There are lots of pieces included in the link I had found above that very well may be copyrighted, however. I just pointed out the copyright notice on page 1 as a CYA measure.

Unlike a patent (which dates from when the discovery was made or registered - depending on the country) a copyright dates on printed music is the publication date. Hence if something is republished - it can have a new copyright date and that imprint/copy will differ perhaps in terms of dynamics, articulation, tempo markings etc and rarely in the note pitches or values.

For something like Stars and Stripes there are numerous publications at various dates and some different arrangements. Obviously the original ones will no longer be subject to copyright while recent publications will be. Needless to say most music publishers tend not to make older publications available and instead put recent publications at higher prices ...

The original work is in public domain because it was published in 1896(?).

Congratulations! But see my earlier post at 14:25 on Friday, March 09, 2007 above, in which I posted the direct link to the PDF file and mentioned it was on page 17.
