As long as the seller produces an instrument to match his description, you can't very well fault him for selling it....If he can find customers that will give him their money, he's going to make a profit, and that's what sellers are in it for. Even if he got bad feedback, he could just switch usernames and go on selling those junkers. In any case, I'm glad to hear you haven't spent your savings on that flute...If you do start to feel like your instrument is holding you back musically, then it is time to consider an upgrade. Until then, the flute you have now should work fine, assuming you give it the proper maintainance. Incidentally, what grade are you in now?

Most of that positive feedback is left before the flute gets played much, when it still appears to have been a good buy....A couple of months after the auction, the buyer will start noticing that things are going wrong with the flute.

1) I agree - stay AWAY from the flutes that are colored!

2) Don't trust eBay. I actually know one person that got a very nice Gemindhardt open-holed, silver (I think) flute from eBay, but she was lucky. I know people who have gotten piccolos (I think) from eBay. It's better, I think, to save up and buy an instrument you are comfortable with.

But that's just my opinion.

In most cases it's a good idea to buy from other sources than eBay, but there are exceptions to that second point of yours, and no reason to avoid eBay just because it's eBay. If you do your research and take precautions, you can get some EXCELLENT deals from eBay. For instance, I bought an Eb flute from eBay back in December for $600 dollars when exactly the same make of flute in the same condition was selling at a well known internet retailer for more than twice that. Now, if you're looking for a new flute that you'll be playing a lot, you need to be sure to playtest the individual instrument that you'll be buying...That can be arranged with some sellers on eBay, but in many cases it's best to buy from a real person/store. There's no reason not to trust eBay...You just have to take care that you know what you're buying and what it's worth in its various states of repair (but that's true of any transaction).

The Yamaha that you have should get you throught high school just fine assumming it is in good condition and well kept up. If you want to be different you could always have gold plating put on the rings of it and add a gemstone crown or something. I do that on flutes that I sell so that they are different. I like different myself and don't like having the same that everyone else has. You can view some pictures of what I have done with some flutes just to give you an idea.

There's nothing good about colored instruments. Especially in flutes. The sound won't be as good and you'll have to get it repaired a whole lot more than a regular flute
