why they seem to crawl out of the woodwork and climb onto tables when they are inspired. Check out "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" with Will Ferrell who plays a mean jazz flute (flute actually played by Katisse Buckingham) in the style of Ian Andersen.

I don't quite call Ian Anderson Jazz flute, but maybe progressive, rocking, or even at times New Age (Oh, I hate those 2 words too). Yes, there have been many great jazz flutists and in fact I actually considered the flute from the earliest of ages to be a premier jazz instrument like the sax or trumpet. I used to listen to "The World of Jazz" in the 1970s and it opened with a jazz flute duo. One of my favorite movies as a kid was "Bullitt" and there is a scene in a Jazz Bar where the flute is just Jazzing up the house, and I came to think of the flute as the ultimate jazz instrument, next to sax. With all those memorable times where the flute was Jazzing it up, jazz flute took over my life. Ok, so did classical, and rock, and world music too...I am kinda like that. I like everything! But the flute IS a Jazz instrument. It is a premier jazz instrument right there with the best of em!

I do a lot of solo piano gigs at local art galleries...a couple of them have regular poetry readings/clubs and hire a piano player as well for entertainment while they're drinking wine and munching in between breaks. One of these groups had been asking me to improv as background while they are reading. I brought my flute and did that instead of piano....took me back to the beatnik era, but I'm getting repeat. Jazz flute and poetry is the ultimate!!

Actually, I would call Anderson a jazz flutist who plays in a rock and. Actually there were a fair number of great bands from late 60s and early 70s where members were jazz players. But Anderson's style of playing came for a great part from Roland Kirk who was mainly jazz. "Serenade to a Cuckoo" is one shining example.

On the other hand Anderson did have a solo album that I would agee is very muci new age influenced. "Divinities: Twelve Dances with God" It's not quite so hard core with the solos.
