I put together an arrangement of J. S. Bach's Menuet in G for Flute Ensemble based on sources available in the public domain. Check out my profile to download PDFs of the score and parts.

The arrangement is flexible and can be played as a solo, duet, trio, quartet, or larger ensemble with all C flutes or with alto and bass flutes.

Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions for improvement.

Thanks!

I think it is a nice work you have done. Very interesting at least for students like me, but probably for many others here.

I would suggest, if you can, to produce a midi file and upload it to the 8notes site.

With midi and suitable SW, I could edit it, for example to play the solo with synthesized accompaniment, or change the bass flute to another instrument like cello, set the tempo, etc.

It is a very good practise for me and also very gratifying.

I added the midi file as you requested. Why didn't I think of that before?

I also just finished a version of Bach's Air (on the G String) for Flute Quartet. It is based on the version for string quartet that is available in public domain. Check it out on my profile page.

My next project is an arrangement of Scarborough Fair whenever I get the chance.

Thanks for the midi. I could not wait and made a couple of mp3s out of it, replacing the bass flute with cello. One file has the solo flute included and the other has this instrument silenced (to play along).

Unfortunately, the accompaniment masks the solo (I did not balanced the whole thing correctly).

I wanted to upload them to some place where you could listen and evaluate the results; I tried for a long time with putfile.com and it did not work.

Then I did something I had preferred not to do: I uploaded both files to my profile page.

But it is clearly indicated that these two are your work and not mine. I hope you will understand it; if you think it is not correct just tell me and I will delete them.

Right now they are pending from Admin approval; I suppose they are not yet available for other members.

The arrangement with cello as accompaniment is beautiful. It will be a pleasure to play along the solo with it.

I would rather play it somewhat faster, as the very long notes are very demanding on air. It can be done, but it would have taken more time and as I said, I could not wait...

As soon as they become available, please listen to them and please give me your opinion.

No problem! They are public domain, so adapt them as you wish.

Thanks,

I consider that a music arrangement with four or five instruments of an old work like the air on G is your own work and in no way "a public domain" work. No matter you obtained the basic song from public domain sources.

As I understand it (more opinions welcome), if you make a new score by entering the notes one by one be it by hand or with some SW, based on a piece that is previous to 1923, the "edition" becomes yours.

I suggest you check the conditions for uploading files in this same site, it is well explained there.

And if you make a new arrangement adding parts and harmony to one of the most famous melody it is clear for me that you could even copyright it, were you interested in such a thing.

You have decided to share your work with the forum members and that is nice and I thank you for it.

But it could be taht you are being too much modest. We must always appreciate the value of any work (and the effort implied) made by others, but also our own works and efforts.

BTW, the two MP3s are still pending for Admin authorization. I hope they become available soon.

Okay, so it might not be public domain, but I am offering it as such.

See the following from the Wikipedia page on Public Domain:

It is commonly believed by non-lawyers that it is impossible to put a work into the public domain. Although copyright law generally does not provide any statutory means to "abandon" copyright so that a work can enter the public domain, this does not mean that it is impossible or even difficult, only that the law is somewhat unclear. Congress may not have felt it necessary to codify this part of the law, because abandoning property (like a tract of land) to the public domain has traditionally been a matter of common law, rather than statute.
