Hi, I'm trying out for All-State this year and need some advice. I tried out for it last year and got called back, but I only made it to region band. I've memorized all my terms and I've got my piece, scales, and chromatic all worked up. I just need some help with my tone. I've been getting averages for a long time, but now that I have my braces off I'm hoping to receive a higher score. Do you know of any tone improving exercises that could help? I heard that if you put your lip plate between the space of your chin and lip it's supposed to sound better. Is that true? When I try it, it's harder. So if you have any tips on tone improvement please give them to me. Thank y'all sooo much!

Get a private teacher. I can tell you how to fix your embouchure if I can't see what you are doing wrong.

I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm just trying to improve my tone. I know it will probably come with practice. Thanks for your response.

How do you know if you are not doing anything wrong if you don't go see a private flute instructor? If you ask such a question, you must doubt that there is something wrong.

People on an internet forum can't tell you specific things to do if you want to improve your tone. Nobody here knows what you play like, and no advice can be given without hearing how you play.

This has been harped to death on here but GET A PRIVATE TEACHER. You'll do this if you really care about playing better. If you don't care about playing better, you're just wasting your time posting about it.

For tone development, one of the best studies is De La Sonorite by Marcel Moyse. Many private teachers use this to help students with their tone. And, like others have said, study with a private teacher.
