Well, I`ve played the flute for a year, and other ppl say u need to work on expanding ur lungs and pushing down ur diaphragm when u breathe. I was doing a sci fair project on if band or choir helps build the lungs better, does any1 have a link to a site that might help? Thanx. And if ur flute doesn`t make a sound and ur sure everything`s right, then have you had someone else try on ur flute? It might be the flute itself...

MOST people who use the word diaphragm haven`t a clue what they are talking about.

WE tighten our diaphragm muscle to breath IN (and to assist in expel matter from the lower part of our bodies!) The diaphragm CANNOT push air out. It is capable only of pushing the intestines down, hence the belly outwards. The diaphragm plays no part in blowing air OUT from the lungs. It cannot. It is physically impossible for it to do so.

Air is PUSHED out of the lungs by using the "abdominal" muscles, in front of the soft part of the stomach, and by using the intercostal muscles (between the ribs).

FACT!!
