Well, when it comes to teaching or playing professionally I can tell you that you would have to go to a college or university and major in music to get a degree in musical teaching, preforming or conducting.

1. Music teaching- teach at a middle school, high school or college somewhere I`m not sure on the income maby 30,000 or 40,000?

2. Music Preforming- Ha anywhere but mainly in a professional symphony orchestra somewhere with band, stringed and percussion instruments. Income around $60,000 or up a year

3. Conducting- conductor of a professional symphony orchestra, $600,000 a year. A lot isn`t it! :-)

Oh and I play the cello. Talk directly to your teacher and ask questions that you don`t know.

Oh and I met a lady in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra who played a cello worth $500,000, so that`s how much the performers get payed to instruments expensive like that. I`m not sure about band instruments but the minimum price of a stringed instrument in the ASO is $86,000. That is because they only have perfect sounding instruments, cheaper priced stringed instruments sound worse and the ASO is very strict on that. Having bad sounding instruments makes a symphony orchestra sound bad which is why they usually have very expensive instruments, but that`s the ASO.

As a professional flutist and teacher...I can tell you that unless you WORK HARD, you won`t get far - flute players are a dime a dozen, but GOOD flutists are hard to find.

As far as tonguing goes - if you can say "Dah," then you can tonque. Try it one note at a time - in the middle to lower register first. I call it "soft tonguing" with my students. If you say "Tah" the "t" makes a harsher sound. Imitate the tongue movement on the roof f your mouth - don`t actually make the sound of "Dah." If you have any other questions, you can always ask me directly.

I`m surprised because certainly you were asked to play staccato at some point in your band music. I teach all levels - elementary through college and staccato and harsher tonguing is what bands play mostly - especially marching bands.

Take some private lessons in your area - check the National Flute Association for the local flute club in your area - have your mom call them and get names of local teachers.

Don`t worry - you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to!

And for the person from Atlanta that thinks that Symphony musicians are paid sooooo much to pay for those instruments, think again. Musicians have to have those kinds of instruments to compete, but that does NOT reflect on their income AT ALL. Most live VERY simply, drive older cars and have to teach in addition to playing other gigs too in order to squeak out a living. They also go in to BIG DEBT in order to get those instruments. Really.
