Do NOT buy a first act instrument. It will be a big waste of money. I would suggest sticking with the Yamaha, but I would suggest the 450 rather than 650. The 450 is wood and you have the option of nickel or silver keys.

Okay, there are many different ranges of clarinet companies. There are the big corporate companies like Selmer, Buffet, Yamaha, and LeBlanc, and they reportedly make good horns. I myself play on a Buffet International, a high-intermediate clarinet. My teacher plays on an R13, the standard Buffet professional clarinet.
Also, there are other smaller companies that make clarinets, like Chadash, or Rossi. I have heard that they are excellent, though I have never had the pleasure of playing on a clarinet made by either of those companies. They are expensive, but they recieve more attention. The downside is that there`s not many choices about the model, and they only come in standard keys, like Bb and A.

My horn is a very personal thing to me, and the one I have (a 1976 R-13) is deeply satisfying to own and play. I have played for 44 years. My first horn was an ebony Robert, so old it required a custom barrel to play in tune, yet that ancient wood had a lovely tone. Slowly I worked my way up, from a wood Bundy to a Selmer Signet 100 to a 1947 Buffet K-series, each one a little closer to the sound I wanted, and finally to my present horn. Its sound delights me. That is what finding a horn should be about.

By the way, by reading quite a bit I discovered that choosing the right combintation of barrel (a Moennig and a Pyne) and mouthpiece(a Bay and a vintage crystal Selmer refaced by Richard Hawkins), ligature (a Bay and an Oleg) and vintage, top quality reeds make an immense difference in the sound, but this all requires a great deal of experimentation that is specific to one`s own horn and ombrechure. Work well worth doing--the result is...satisfaction.

The best clarinet is the most expensive. We all know that. The more you pay - the more you get. I paid $7000 for each of my four clarinets and I haven`t been prouder. I show them to my friends and they say that I am pretty cool. If you buy a clarinet you will need to buy some reeds to make it work. I found that Rico Reeds work pretty well on Buffet clarinets and Zonda Reeds work well with the Selmers. Your local music store will supply you with these items. They can also sell you the clarinet for slightly above retail price. This is where I got mine. For Buffet clarinets the mouthpiece that comes with the clarinet is about as good as you can find - ANYWHERE. Once I bought a clarinet and sold the buffet mouthpiece for more than the price of the clarinet! I will buy these mouthpieces if anyone has them for about $500 each. I can always sell them again later.

Did that answer any questions?

You paid $7000 for each of four clarinets? Are you insane? What a loser! If you are throwing money away can I have some? What kind of clarinets did you get?

I am an experienced player and at this time the best clarinet is the Tosca by Buffet.I have one myself and I tried a lot of clarinets.

i agreed with that.i have tried the first few tosca made for marketing from a french saleperson from buffet.it is not resistance and gives a smooth feeling when you play with it.it feels and sounds like my opus 2 but more stable tonality.i would buy one if given a chance to.

I have a yamaha 650 and a buffet RC. My yamaha sounds pretty damn good especially for $1300. Only thing I like better about my buffet is that the keys are smaller and closer together so you can move faster. My friend has an leblanc opus and I tried playing it. It was nice but not any better than my RC. Of course my yamaha can`tfollow the sound of buffet but that`s because it`s cheaper. Go compare a yamaha custom series clarinet to an RC. You will get similar results

The Tosca Sucks! I spent $7000 on each of my clarinets. You won`t believe where I got them. Up for auction in 2003 were the clarinets that Robert Marcellus used when he began to play the clarinet at age 10!!! They are both made by Vito and are both in Bb but I reserve one to play for Bb parts and the other I use only to play A parts, but I have to transpose. I switched out the barrels for top of the line click barrels to give the sound the extra kick any clarinet always needs. If anyone can top that setup let them try.

By the way, transposing on the Tosca clarinets is much more difficult and sometimes doesn`t work at all.

Sometimes people laugh when they hear me play but I am believe that they just get excited to hear Marcellus` real clarinets performing live for them and they get all `giggly`.

Maybe I am not the best clarinet player on earth but with these clarinets I am pretty damn close!

You are a little strange but i have to admit that I am jealous of your acqusitions. Marcellus sounded bad and now I realize that it was because he played on Vito clarinets. Seems like his $500 Kaspar mouthpiece was worth more than his clarinets!!

I just bought a clarinet. Brand name is Fin-Der. Can`t find any info any where. It also has markings from French Coast. This leads me to believe it was made on the ivory coast. If anyone has any insite that would be great. I have had vito, selmer, yamaha and bundy. Best sound was when I put the vito and the bundy together.

I have a Bb Buffet E-11 and I love it. I also have a Leblanc Noblet Artist Eb and another no name Bb that mom picked up for 50 bucks, so I could bang it up in middle school and marching band. The mouthpiece is also important, but if your daughter has a good teacher, the teacher will work on finding the right mouthpiece for her. I have B-45 Van Doren mouthpieces (which I saw someone had already mentioned) for both the Bb and the Eb and I am quite happy with them.
