ok not to boast or anything but my clarinet teacher calls me his "little star". i started playing clarinet in october and im setting my grade 5 clarinet exam in march. i regret playing clarinet now because you cant get further than your school band with it as they do not have clarinets in jazz or blues bands and i have always loved the trumpet so im thinking of starting. will this affect my clarinet playing at all???

your help is appreciated

The embouchure for both instruments is completely different. I play the clarinet but have mucked around on my sister`s trumpet; and maybe it`s just me, but if you go straight from one to the other your mouth will really hurt.

I can`t remember who it was, but there was a pro who played both, but had to drop one of the instruments when he went to a con. I don`t remember who it was or which instrument he had to drop, but he cited the different embouchures as the reason.

Hope that helped! But don`t let it deter you if you`re keen.

Playing trumpet requires different embouchure muscles to playing the clarinet. Some teachers are dead against students playing more than one instrument but I think that some combinations are ok. However, mixing brass and woodwind is a recipe for disaster. If you are as talented as it sounds like I would advise you to stick with woodwind instruments. What about saxophone? It is very similar to clarinet and you can play it in jazz bands etc. Good luck with your grade 5 exam.

You can double on saxophone, as most clarinetists who play jazz do, or you can be brave and forge ahead on the clarinet. My nephew plays clarinet in a ROCK group. Listen to Eddie Daniels. He does everything with the clarinet.

hi! well it`s the first time i hear someone saying that plays trumpet and clarinet. If you want to be an instrumentist you must choose between clarinet and trumpet. i prefer clarinet!!! lol
Bye! oh...i have some transcribed solos from eddie Daniels records liKe his version of "blue suede shoes". You may also listen a clarinetist named Andrew Firth...it`s amazing!!

you`re all saying that it`s hard to go from woodwind to brass? try going from trombone to french horn. Just the differences in the size of the mouthpeice will kill you when it comes to brass.

Personaly I play 5 instruments. I play Sax was my first then clarinet flute soprano and trumpet, Although my soprano isnt that great. My music teacher didnt seem to be against the whole playing brass and woodwinds but he was curious why I wanted to play brass. I explained it was cause I was playing in a bugle corps on the weekend. He didnt seem to mind besides that he said the second his favourite and only first clarinet player skills start to fade he will refuse to let me play trumpet.

I do a lot of jazz clarinet. What makes you think that you can`t play clarinet in jazz ezzie?
