say one person in a clarinet choir plays the bass clarinet part, but the instrument is broken. if they were to play that part on a regular clainet, will the group even be judgde? is there some type of penalty? thanks if anyone knows.

i'm sure it varies by location, but in our clarinet choir last year, we had a girl playing the contra-bass part on a bass clarinet because tehre were issues with the contra. i'm not sure the judges even knew. i also played the fourth clarinet part for one song on bass clarinet, because we couldn't find the bass part- then we found the bass part, but it was boring, so i just kept the fourth part.
i'd ask your band director, or an official-type person, or something.
