That's sooo dumb!!! Once again, I don't play the clarinet, but I've had this happen to me before!! A lot of people think that girls can't play the saxophone, tuba, trombone, etc...but that's not true!! We're equally able to play any instument as well as the guys!! Guys shouldn't be criticized for playing the flute, clarinet, etc. either!! Honestly, where are the rules that say whether one instrument is for girls and another is for guys??

I was in an honor band in the beginning of the year and I earned 2nd chair for the alto sax section. When I got there, I expected to be between to guys, but I was happy to see that out of the 5 people chosen to play the alto sax in the band, 4 of those people (including myself) were girls. It always makes me happy to see another female saxophonist or a girl playing what has been seen as a male instument or vice-versa.

I played clarinet and switched because of this exact reason....i am ashamed. i love the clarinet, almost as much as saxophone, and was tired of being put down for it. DONT EVER LET SOMEONE PUT DOWN YOU OR THE INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY.

So there.
Its not a girls instrument, as you should know, its just a stereotype made by jealous sax players. I am not one of the stereotypical people. Clarinet is awesome.

haha...clarinets are girly instruments... boys mostly play clarients where im from, but instruments arent meant to be played by a particular gender..

Thats absolutely ridiculous, Instrments have no gender preference and most of the worlds best clarinetist and floutist are men. I am a guy and I love to play my clarinet, I am first chair and I think its the best horn for me to play, It doesn't matter what other people think, my clarinet section has 4 guys on the clarinet and that doesn't mean a thing except that they love the horn.

Well, at my school's band program there are three boys and three girls that play clarinet (including me) and the girls that play clarinet at our school aren't very good.

Oh and FYI the clarinet is commonly considered the hardest woodwind instrument (besides bassoon) in the band, as the clarinet's range is longest. )

Okay, I think we've all just about beaten this dead horse quite enough. Can we all just agree that both guys and girls can play clarinet, and that any who says otherwise is just small-minded and immature?

i think bassoon wins largest range, too, though i guess it varies by player. i beat my bassoon friend by a half step, with my low-c-extended bass clarinet(thats 4 more low notes than a standard low E clarinet).

not that that actually matters, i just figured it was worth pointing out.

naw clarinet is one of the few instruments that is really unisex I think. people don't know what they're talking about. Both my boyfriend and i our major instrument is clarinet, but we play other things.

In my band most of the trumpets are girls even though they're considered a "guy instrument." I think that's so dumb. It's an instrument for goodness sakes! It can have a female OR male player! It doesn't matter. The clarinetists are equal girls and guys. My band is lucky actually. Nobody really groups instrument sections into categories at my school. Ok, well I'll go now!

Flute isn't girly either. See "Beatboxing floutist" on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59ZX5qdIEB0

Girly? I think not...

(Pure unadulterated awesome, I think.)
